January - February Favorites (2013)
Here’s a round-up of things I’ve been impressed by recently!
Sikin79 Super Perfection BB Cream - I really like Skin79 BB Creams in general but I felt a need to mention this particular one because the more neutral coloring matches a medium-light skintone a lot better than many other grey or overly-pink BB Creams which give an unnatural cast to anyone with yellow/gold tones. Unlike typical tinted moisturizers, this gives a bit more coverage, and contains adenosine and arbutin to even out the skin. At the same time, it’s great for combination skin and sets to a natural soft matte finish.
Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation - I’m using the brand new shade, Medium Ivory (great for NC25), and I absolute love this foundation. It’s a medium-to-full coverage creamy product that gives a luminous, natural-looking finish but is probably better for normal and combination skin types. I don’t find it to be too much coverage because I actually just apply it in areas as a concealer when I don’t need something very thick and opaque. If you’re sensitive to silicones, beware, but otherwise, give this one a try.
KATE Gel Liner
Gel liners are everywhere, but this is one of the longest lasting brands I have ever tried. This liner goes on and then sets into a really tough film on the skin. I actually need to cleanse at least twice with a micellar eye makeup remover or rub with an oil-based cleanser to get it off. This is a Japanese drugstore brand that isn’t easy or all that cheap to find outside of Asia, so you might need to look on eBay, but if you have VERY oily lids, this is worth a shot.
I used it recently as a base for a dramatic liner look, above (“duochrome” effect was achieved with a blue shadow). The shade, BU-1 is a blackened navy with a slight cobalt shift. It will look almost black but the blue comes out beautifully when the light shifts.
And yes, it outlasts every high-end brand I’ve tried so far.
Maybelline Hyper Glossy Liquid Liner
When applied thick, the black version goes on with a slight lacquered finish. I won’t say it’s dramatically “GLOSSY” but it does definitely give an extra something to a basic black or brown liner look.
And I especially love Turquoise Blue (which is really a pearlescent green-gold shade rather than blue…) The pearl makes it less glossy than the creme-finish ones like the black, but the color is so pretty, who cares?
Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough as Taupe
Perfect taupe brown base that I use from day to day. I use it to create a little depth and I like layering a shimmery shadow over it for intensity. It’s a perfect neutral that lasts all day on its own (if you don’t have extremely oily lids), but it also works with just about any other shadow you want to put on top of it.
NYX Cinnamon blush
This matte vermillion is a perfect cross between orange and red, and goes with all the coral and orange lipsticks I’ve been reaching for recently. I use it whenever I need an orange-toned blush for warm lipsticks like MAC Lady Danger, etc. Use it with a stippling brush to prevent over-application, as you can overdo it.
